Global investments in solar photovoltaic energy stood at almost 300 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. Investment in solar PV has increased greatly since 2013 when it amounted to just over 100 billion U.S. dollars. Solar PV was the technology that accounted for the largest share of renewable energy investments in 2022.
Global energy spending is set to surpass $3 trillion for the first time this year. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that investment in solar photovoltaics will exceed $500 billion in 2024, surpassing the combined investment in all other electricity generation sources.
“ Investments in solar, both utility-scale and rooftop, are expected to reach $450 billion in 2025, making it the single largest component in global energy investment,” notes the IEA. A major factor fueling this growth is the plummeting cost of clean energy technologies.
The $770 billion figure is considered “moderate” because the precipitous drop in solar panel prices has slowed the dollar increase in solar investment, even as capacity continues to grow rapidly. The chart above shows that more money is going into solar than all other forms of generation combined, reaching $500 billion in 2024.
Total solar investments reached $25 billion, supported by foreign direct investments and domestic funding. Key initiatives included grid-scale projects and increased rooftop solar adoption.
