The Niger continues to face a complex humanitarian crisis, mainly due to civil insecurity, severe flooding and spillover effects from the conflicts in Burkina Faso, Mali and Nigeria, including cross-border population movements.
Furthermore, Niger is at the crossroads of several regional crises, notably the crisis in the Liptako Gourma area (straddling Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger) and the Lake Chad Basin crisis (including Cameroon, Chad, Nigeria and Niger). It is against this context that Niger hosts populations in situations of forced displacement.
IOM Niger's programming relies on a whole-of-society response to Niger's specific challenges based on local knowledge and solutions to drive real change in the way migration is managed, perceived and used for development perspectives and to respond to the humanitarian needs of crisis-affected populations in Niger.
Niger is also faced with the return of migrants (both Nigerien and non-Nigerien) to Niger, who are driven back to the Niger border from Algeria and Libya by the authorities of these countries.
