Installing a photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of a building introduces new fire risks to the building. First, the PV installations have been shown to increase the chances of ignition through the failure of any of the electrical components of the system. Second, the PV installation can increase the consequences of a PV-related fire.
In terms of PV installations on flat roofs, the risk can be mitigated through reduced ignition probability and reduction of consequences. Good components and products, as well as installation practice and maintenance are all necessary for achieving risk reduction on the side of probability.
While it might be economical to have extensive PV panels coverage on the roof, maintaining a sufficient area of roof free of panels allows safe access and effective firefighting in case of fire events (RISCAuthority & Fire Protection Association, 2016).
PV panels installed over a combustible roof system is discouraged as it will almost certainly increase the severity of a loss. The rooftop placement of PV panels means any fire igniting due to the PV panels or cabling is beyond the building's fixed fire protection and detection systems.
The primary objective of this workshop was to review the latest information, experiences, and research related to fire safety of photovoltaic panel installations on commercial building proofs to
