Independent climate think tank Ember has published a new report showing that wind and solar power accounted for 10 percent of global electricity generation in the first six months of 2020. That figure represents an impressive leap on the situation five years ago when it accounted for just five percent.
Wind and solar have doubled since 2015, when they generated 5% (1083 TWh) of the world's electricity. Some countries are generating significantly more electricity from wind and solar. The global leaders are Denmark and Uruguay, which generated 61% and 44% of their electricity from wind and solar in 2020.
Solar, wind, and other renewable technologies are growing quickly. They will hopefully account for a large share of electricity production in the future — but the countries that have a low-carbon electricity mix today have relied heavily on hydroelectric and nuclear power in recent years. We must learn from these country-level examples.
That figure represents an impressive leap on the situation five years ago when it accounted for just five percent. Germany is well above the global figure with wind and solar generating an impressive 42 percent of its electricity from January through June of this year.
